Manchester United are set to sign Lindelof in a £38million deal next month.
But Stoke rejected the chance to land the centre-back five years ago when he was valued at just £260,000.
That is according to the Daily Mail, who claim Lindelof had a session with the Potters but failed to impress.
Middlesbrough are also said to have made a move for the 22-year-old Sweden international.
Former Boro boss Tony Mowbray brought the defender to the club on trial but they could not afford the then-academy player.
It is claimed Boro then went back in for Lindelof in January this year, agreeing a loan deal in view to a £5m permanent transfer.

But the move collapsed when Benfica inserted additional clauses to the deal.
Lindelof has risen to be one of Benfica's mainstay players this season, immediately attracting the interest of some of Europe's biggest clubs.
It was claimed yesterday that his transfer to United had been negotiated overnight after Benfica's president Luis Filipe Vieira flew to Manchester to thrash out the deal.
Portuguese newspaper Record also report that United are keen on Benfica right-back Nelson Semedo.
