Mikel is yet to feature for Chelsea since the arrival of manager Antonio Conte in the summer and is out of contract at the end of the season.
His Nigeria team-mate Odion Ighalo recently urged Watford to sign the 29-year-old midfielder when the transfer window reopens.

The Hornets striker said: "I would like it if Mikel joined me at Watford. He is my captain at the national team.
"Apart from that he is a very good player, very talented. There is no team in the Premier League that will not want to have such a player.

But Ighalo's manager insists he is not interested in signing Mikel, who has racked up 249 appearances in the Premier League since 2006.
"I don’t know, it’s the first time I hear it," Mazzarri said. "I’m not interested but if [Ighalo] thinks it and he said then it’s probably because he think it's that way."
