The striker led his side to a 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night, bagging four goals to become England’s all-time top scorer in the competition (33), surpassing Wayne Rooney’s record of 30.
Kane scored three penalties as well as a tap-in from close range after Joshua Kimmich’s effort was saved, with Michael Olise (twice), Raphael Guerreiro, Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka getting on the scoresheet for Vincent Kompany’s side.
Bayern broke a host of records en route to victory, with Kane claiming several of his own. The former Tottenham star became the first player in history to score a hat-trick of penalties on the European stage.
Kane also became the first Englishman to score four goals in a match in the competition since Smith led Arsenal to victory over FK Austria Wien in 1991.
Responding to a tweet outlining that Kane had matched Smith’s feat, the 61-year-old took aim at the former Spurs captain in a light-hearted dig. He wrote on Twitter, formerly known as X: “I didn’t need penalties though.”
Bayern’s victory laid down an early marker that they have their hearts set on going all the way in the competition, having reached the semi-finals last year before being put to the sword by Real Madrid, who went on to win the competition – beating fellow German side Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the final.
But Kane believes that Bayern need to improve if they are to make their mark on the Champions League, despite winning by a seven-goal margin.

Speaking after the match, he said: “It was an amazing game. The first half was really good, we took our chances. We didn't start the second half well and got caught from a couple of second balls. We'll have to learn from that.
"Today we got away with that bad start in the second half, but against top opposition, we could get punished for that. But the reaction afterwards was really good. It's great to score all these goals."
Bayern will face Aston Villa in their next Champions League match before a scintillating clash with Barcelona.
