Latapy keen on remaining a Bairn until next summer
RUSSELL LATAPY, the grand old man of Scottish football, is determined to see out the season with Falkirk.
The amazing 40 year old is to be honoured tomorrow by the Falkirk fans with the home game against former club Hibs being acclaimed as “Russell Latapy Day.”
It is a genuine tribute to the legendary Soca Warrior who is still wanted by Trinidad and Tobago to be part of their World Cup bid to reach the finals in South Africa in 2010.
The love of his country has never in doubt but last night be declared: “Right now, I want to see the season out with Falkirk.
“It is difficult for me to say what will happen at the end of the season.
“My body is going to decide when I will give it up. But as long as I feel I am making a positive contribution then I will be happy to keep going.”
My body is going to decide when I will give it up
However, the lure of his national team is never far from his thoughts and he admitted:There is a new situation now after the national team has asked me to come back for a couple of games.
“It is a question of me speaking to them about how much they want me to be involved in the future development of the national team. Then I would sit down with everything concerned and try to come to an understanding.
“At this particular time right now my entire focus is doing well with Falkirk football club.
Latapy was a star turn last week for the Soca Warriors in their victory over Cuba to clinch a place in the final qualifying phase to win at place at the World Cup finals in South Africa in 2010.
This means his national team play ten games between February and November of next year – and that is huge ask for the 40 year old.
Russell said: “I’ve never said no to the national team and I normally get a call to come back when we are struggling.
“I’ve probably retired about four times only for the call to come to return. “I think Trinidad want me to remain involved but there is a lot of talking to be done. I have to decide what is best for all parties, none more so than my family.
