Jordan Henderson to captain England: Midfielder takes the armband from Rooney for Spain
ENGLAND boss Gareth Southgate has confirmed Jordan Henderson will captain England against Spain at Wembley tomorrow night.
England and Scotland players defy FIFA and wear poppies
It will be the second time the Liverpool captain has worn the armband in his international career after captaining the team against Slovenia last month.
Southgate's decision follows doubts over Wayne Rooney's fitness after he missed training this morning.
Southampton's Ryan Bertrand was also absent through injury.
England interim manager Gareth Southgate and Jordan Henderson arrive for training
Southgate said: "Both are being assessed for minor issues this morning. I don't know if they will be fit for Tuesday so they must be a doubt but until we look later we can't be sure.
"Everybody else has trained this morning so we're good to go.
"I wouldn't start Wayne in this game anyway. Jordan Henderson will be captain.
Jack Wilshere could start for England against Spain
"The key for me is I believe we have several leaders including one next to me (Joe Hart) and I don't think we can have just one captain. Too much responsibility has been on Wayne, we need to share that.
"Once you have a team of those leaders you can have a lot of success.
Jack Wilshere was named in the England squad for the first time since Euro 2016 and Southgate is confident he will show his class.
He added: "Jack is getting to the peak level physically so for him to be back in with the squad was the first step and he will obviously be looking to get into the game."
