Confirmed: Wigan sack manager Gary Caldwell amid early relegation fears
WIGAN have sacked manager Gary Caldwell.
Gary Caldwell secured Wigan promotion from League One last season
Caldwell leaves Wigan 23rd in the Championship with just two wins from 14 games.
He becomes the second manager of the day to lose his job after Wolves sacked Walter Zenga.
“It’s undoubtedly the toughest decision I’ve had to make since becoming Chairman,” said chairman David Sharpe.
Caldwell was appointed Wigan manager last year
“We deservedly won the League One title last season. However, we have not managed to carry on that momentum into this season and, after careful consideration over a period of time, I feel that we need to act now in the best long term interests of the club.
“We thank Gary for all the hard work he has put in and wish him all the best for the future.
“We need to identify a new manager who can have an immediate impact and deliver success in the long term.”
Wigan won the FA Cup with Caldwell as captain in 2013
Caldwell was appointed manager at Wigan in April 2015, having joined them as a player five years before.
He played 111 games for Wigan and captained the club to FA Cup glory in 2013.
