Mauricio Pochettino: Tottenham injury blow will not force us into transfer market
MAURICIO POCHETTINO says he has no plans to sign a new central defender this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino will not look to replace Jan Vertonghen this summer
Tottenham have been linked with a move for a new centre-back after Jan Vertonghen picked up an ankle injury during international duty with Belgium at Euro 2016.
But Pochettino insists his squad is well stocked with players who can cover Vertonghen until he returns to match fitness, along with a number of youth prospects.
The Spurs manager said: "Jan Vertonghen is in London but he is training very well now. He's very close to coming back.
"[Kevin] Wimmer, [Toby] Alderweireld and Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama can play centre-back. And then young players like CCV [Cameron Carter-Vickers] and [Dominic] Ball. We have enough players in that position.
"He [Vertonghen] is going well in the last few days and we'll see when we arrive Monday and start training with all group what condition he is."
Tottenham kick off their Premier League campaign at Everton on 13 August, and Pochettino added: "If it's not possible [for him to play], we have players enough to replace him."
