Manchester United transfer deadline: Club have week to convince £23.5m international star
MANCHESTER UNITED will hear if they stand a chance of signing defensive target Mats Hummels by the end of next week, according to reports in Germany.
Mats Hummels could leave Dortmund at the end of the season, with United and Bayern interested
United are thought to be chasing Hummels as manager Louis van Gaal seeks new recruits in his back line.
They were linked with the player last year but no deal materialised and Borussia Dortmund are thought to want £23.5million for their star man this summer.
United were thought to be out of the race to sign Hummels when Bayern Munich themselves said he had decided to join the Bundesliga champions.
Hummels refuted that suggestion himself, claiming: "This s****y statement has made a misleading expression. I have no idea why they had to do it.
"Everything is possible and nothing is decided yet."
Guardiola refuses to comment on Hummels rumours
United officials are pushing ahead with transfer plans despite uncertainty over manager Louis van Gaal's future.
Express Sport understands former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is their No 1 candidate to replace Van Gaal if the Dutchman leaves this summer.
