Liverpool News: Huge injury boost, Sakho ban extension, £23m midfielder update
EXPRESS SPORT brings you the latest from Anfield.
Emre Can - Spotlight on
Emre Can could start for Liverpool in their Europa League semi-final second-leg clash against Villarreal on Thursday after making a speedy recovery from an ankle injury.
The 22-year-old midfielder returned to training yesterday and now has three days to prove to boss Jurgen Klopp he is ready to start at Anfield.
Can ruptured his ligaments in the dramatic 4-3 Europa League quarter-final second-leg win against Borussia Dortmund, which was expected to rule him out for a month.
However, he has handed the Reds a major boost after recovering quicker than expected.
Emre Can, Mamadou Sakho, Antonio Candreva
Meanwhile, Mamadou Sakho’s ban for an anti-doping violation has been extended by FIFA.
The 26-year-old was handed a 30-day suspension by UEFA last month after testing positive for a banned substance following the Europa League win over Manchester United on March 17.
Sakho chose to not contest the charge in a bid to avoid a long-term ban.
However, FIFA have chosen to extend his current ban, meaning he will not be able to feature in international friendly fixtures for France.
Finally, Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Lazio midfielder Antonio Candreva.
That is according to TV station Rai Sport, who claim Lazio are ready to offload the Italy international after earmarking replacements for the £23million-rated star.
It is understood Napoli's Manolo Gabbiadini and Marseille loanee Florian Thauvin are in line to join the club this summer if Candreva is sold, which looks increasingly likely after the Serie A side failed to secure Champions League football next season.
The report adds Liverpool are likely to miss out on 29-year-old with Inter Milan now in pole position to sign him as they look to determined to bolster their squad following investment from a Chinese consortium.
