"I've played there a few times throughout my career and I've known for a few years I can play that position," said Rooney.
"I always knew that one day that is where I would play so I've tried to watch and learn what Paul Scholes did. It is early days but hopefully if I keep playing there I can develop and get better.
"We've got pacy, exciting players in the attacking positions so it [dropping deeper] frees me up and allows me to get on the ball to try and have a big influence on the game.
"Obviously it is down to the manager, it is his decision, but for the team it is the right thing to do at this moment in time."
