The Stamford Bridge club had seen an opening bid of £54m rejected last week and were prepared to meet Juventus £72m price tag - but Pogba’s wages and reluctance to move this summer proved an insumroutable problem.
Juventus had handed Pogba the coveted No.10 shirt and were adamant all through the summer that the 22-year-old was not for sale, but Chelsea were still in talks with the Italian club up until this morning.
The Stamford Bridge club though have only put the deal on ice, and will make another attempt for Pogba next summer, when they will go toe-to-toe with Barcelona for a player that manager Jose Mourinho has wanted for years.
