Illarramendi has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield this summer after struggling to gain a regular place at the Bernabeu for the past two season.
While the midfielder had hoped the appointment of Rafael Benitez could result in more starting opportunities this term, the new Bernabeu boss has indicated Illarramendi will be a back-up to Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.
