The Kop hero left the club at the end of last season after 27-year association with the club to join MLS side LA Galaxy on an 18-month deal.
But the 35-year-old clearly hasn't forgotten his old club and before his former team-mates kick off at the Britannia (4pm), the ex-England skipper wished Liverpool luck this season.
Gerrard said: "I would just like to take this opportunity to wish Brendan, all his staff, all the players a very successful season.
"I'm going to be watching and supporting my ex-team-mates and all the new signings and hopefully come May we will be celebrating some silverware and a very good season.
