Confirmed: Spurs announce signing of Chelsea and Southampton target Toby Alderweireld
TOTTENHAM have confirmed the signing of Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid.
Toby Alderweireld has signed a five-year-deal at Spurs
The Belgian defender has signed a five-year deal at the club after spending last season at Southampton last season, making 28 appearances in all competitions.
The 26-year-old joins a Spurs squad already packed with Belgians including Nacer Chadli, Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen.
He said: "I’m very proud to be a Spurs player. I’m happy to be here & hope to have a wonderful time with this team.
"From the beginning I knew a lot about the club from Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele & Nacer Chadli.
"It’s nice when you join & know a couple of players. I hope to get to know them a little better now!"
Alderweireld is Spurs' third signing of the summer following deals for defenders Kevin Wimmer from Cologne and Kieran Trippier for £3.5m from Burnley.
Southampton will be left disappointed after they believed they had the right to buy Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid for £6.8m due to the Spanish clubs's failure to pay compensation to dissolve a £1.5m get-out clause in time.
