MANCHESTER UNITED PICTURE SPECIAL: Season review under Louis van Gaal
MANCHESTER UNITED endured one of their most tumultuous seasons in years under the management of Louis van Gaal.
Van Gaal: De Gea will stay [AMBIENT]
At one point they looked destined for mid-table obscurity for a second campaign in a row.
But at the end of it all, the Dutchman steered his new side to fourth in the Premier League and back into Europe.
Granted, he spent almost £150million converting the team into a fighting force and wasn't shackled by European distractions.
But few can argue United have not had a successful season, especially considering how it all started.
So here it is, Manchester United's season in pictures…
Radamel Falcao (left) turned out to be Louis van Gaal's flop signing of the season
August
Life started well for Van Gaal off the back of a successful World Cup.
The new boss was handed free reign to sign who he wanted and secured Angel Di Maria for just shy of £60m plus Radamel Falcao on loan.
Things were looking up.
Leicester City put five past Manchester United back in September
September
However, a humiliating 4-0 League Cup defeat to MK Dons (in August) and a 5-3 loss at Leicester suddenly sent alarm bells ringing at Old Trafford.
Robin van Persie slams past Thibaut Courtois in the Chelsea goal
October
LVG got a major boost 10 games into the campaign, however, when Robin van Persie's late, late equaliser earned United a 1-1 draw with eventual champions Chelsea.
They lost to Manchester City in their next game, but things were beginning to turn in their favour.
Wayne Rooney chips over the goalkeeper to hand United a 2-1 win at Arsenal
November/December
Six straight wins hauled United back up the league and they were suddenly contesting European places - something they hadn't done since Sir Alex Ferguson had left in 2013.
United beat Liverpool 3-0 on Steven Gerrard's (left) last visit to Old Trafford
Christmas
A 3-0 drubbing of Liverpool before Christmas and a Boxing Day victory over Newcastle means Van Gaal enjoyed his first festive schedule… despite some moaning.
Victor Valdes joined Manchester United
January
United scraped to a 0-0 FA Cup draw at Cambridge United in the third round on a cold and frustrating evening for the Red Devils.
They did, however, add former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes to their squad.
Wayne Rooney scored five time for Manchester United in the spring
February/March
Wayne Rooney found his scoring touch in the spring, bagging five goals for his club and another for England before April came along.
However, FA Cup heartbreak against Arsenal meant another trophy-less season at Old Trafford.
Darren Fletcher (left) played against his former club as West Brom beat United 1-0
April
A three-game wobble that saw Chelsea, Everton and West Brom take maximum points off United threatened to derail their season as Liverpool eyed fourth place.
Marouane Fellaini (left) was sent off in the last game of the season
May
But LVG's men held on with five points from their last three games - hardly the most emphatic end to the season as a 0-0 draw at Hull saw Marouane Fellaini red carded and Falacao not even get a last send-off.
