Benitez was discussing his Napoli side's chances of beating Wolfsburg tomorrow night in their Europa League quarter-final first leg.
He said: “Wolfsburg are a strong side with huge potential, so we will give 100 per cent in this difficult game.
“It’s true we tracked Luiz Gustavo, Ivan Perisic and Andre Schurrle for a long time, but it was not possible to sign them.”
Schurrle was at the centre of much transfer speculation in January after falling down the midfield hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Wolfsburg confirm Schurrle
He was eventually sold to Wolfsburg for £22million. In turn, Chelsea raised enough cash from the sale to sign Juan Cuadrado from Fiorentina.
Schurrle initially joined Chelsea for a figure of around £18m just as Benitez was leaving the club, having won the Europa League as manager in the summer of 2013.
This year the Spaniard has steered Napoli though to the last-eight of Europe's secondary club tournament, where they play a Wolfsburg side bang in form and riding high in the Bundesliga.
