The young winger made the decision to represent Belgium - despite having a raft of other options, including England - las April.
And he has been included in every squad, including the team that travelled to the World Cup in Brazil, since that time.
But Wilmots has dropped the 20-year-old for the forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers Cyprus and Israel, citing lack of playing time as a factor.
He said: "I have no doubts at all about his quality, it's just that there's little chance to see him, for him to show that quality."

Januzaj was heavily linked with a loan move in January, with the likes of Real Sociedad and Juventus thought to be interested.
The Red Devils youth product recently admitted that the number of players in front of him in his favoured position was proving a problem at Old Trafford, saying: "My favourite position is as a winger or a no.10.
"There are a lot of players here and I can play in different roles - it is just a case of taking any opportunities."
