Costa has scored seven in his first four outings for Chelsea[GETTY]
The Blues open their campaign in Europe's elite club competition when they host German outfit Schalke at Stamford Bridge tomorrow night (7:45pm).
And here Express Sport looks at some of the individual battles for Jose Mourinhos' men.
DIEGO COSTA v DENNIS AOGO
Costa has begun his Premier League career with seven goals in four games and was influential in Atletico Madrid's passage to the final last term. In the absence of World Cup winner Benedikt Howedes, Aogo faces a formidable test as part of an injury-stricken defence.
NEMANJA MATIC v JULIAN DRAXLER
Draxler, another World Cup winner, operates as a winger or attacking midfielder and has the trickery to test Matic and Chelsea's defence, which has been more porous than usual this term. Matic will hope to contain the German and spark Chelsea's forward forays.
JOHN TERRY v KLAAS-JAN HUNTELAAR
Terry will relish an aerial duel with former Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan frontman Huntelaar. The Dutchman has nine goals in 22 Champions League matches to date and has the mobility to test Terry on the ground.
