Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea contributed just under half of the colossal sum - with a whopping 42 per cent spent in just 12 weeks.
The rise in spending is likely to be the result of substantially increased broadcast revenue from domestic and international TV deals.
That total was almost double the £425m paid out by teams in Spain's La Liga, the next highest spending country.

Elsewhere Liverpool, Everton and Arsenal spent between £30-40m a piece, while the St Mary's exodus left Southampton with a tidy £30m profit.
