Man Utd's biggest flaw was just exposed by Sunderland as Michael Carrick given no option

Manchester United's biggest weakness was laid bare on Saturday afternoon as they laboured to a 0-0 stalemate with Sunderland. The Red Devils have enjoyed a revival under Michael Carrick this calendar year, but a significant problem was revealed with their line-up at the Stadium of Light. United simply lack the squad depth at present.

Carrick was deprived of Benjamin Sesko and Casemiro, with Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee stepping in, and without their star duo, United appeared devoid of creativity. It is an issue that requires addressing over the summer, with United poised to return to the Champions League.

Sunderland created several promising opportunities, but United's backline stood resolute. It appeared to be the plan for United to attempt to catch the Black Cats on the break.

It is an approach that has proved so effective for them against elite sides such as Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, yet they have repeatedly deployed it against opponents they genuinely ought to be defeating.

Saturday proved yet another instance and it is an approach that could come back to haunt the Red Devils if Carrick does commit his future in the summer.

"90 mins sat behind the ball defending against Sunderland and looking to play on the counter. Carrick what is this lmao," one supporter raged on social media.

"Thinking maybe just maybe Carrick and the players know he's not getting the job next season," a second admitted. While a third shared: "Carrick football against teams who know how to sit back..."

And another added: "Is this the Michael Carrick some fans want handed the Manchester United job permanently? No shots on target against newly Promoted Sunderland? Amorim did better here!"

United sealed their return to the Champions League last weekend following victory over Liverpool, and are now coasting towards the Premier League finishing line.

Carrick's men host Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Saturday, before rounding off the campaign with an away fixture at Brighton on the final day of the season.
