It’s been a slow start in the summer transfer window for new Liverpool manager Arne Slot but business could soon pick up now Euro 2024 and Copa America are over. As well as seeking to keep a host of big name players at Anfield, the new boss is also expected to make some signings in a bid to avoid any hangover from the departure of Jurgen Klopp.

The top Premier League clubs won’t be reckless with their transfer business given the Profit and Sustainability rules that have changed the dynamic in England’s top flight. But the Reds have been more financially sensible than most under owners FSG, only sanctioning deals they feel represent long term value.

And now it’s two players who starred at Euro 2024 who Slot is expected to pursue in order to start the 2024/25 campaign with his dream 25-man squad.

There is unlikely to be any movement in the goalkeeping department, with Alisson again set to take the No.1 shirt. Indeed, Slot’s priority in this area will be persuading Caoimhin Kelleher to stay on Merseyside as opposed to seeking first-team football elsewhere, while Vitezslav Jaros will serve as emergency back-up.

Defensively though, a major addition is needed following the departure of Joel Matip, while skipper Virgil van Dijk has just 12 months remaining on his current deal. And the Reds have been touted to move for the £65million rated Marc Guehi following his strong showings for England in Germany.

If Slot can seal that deal, and keep Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez on board, then Liverpool’s defensive depth will suddenly look very strong. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Bradley, Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas will also play their parts with the Reds now back in the expanded Champions League.

Slot will not want to tinker much with the midfield, given how heavily the club invested last summer. Dom Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister have both shown the potential to become mainstays, with the best still to come from the likes of Harvey Elliott, Stefan Bajcetic, Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo, and Curtis Jones.

But further forward, Slot can make two massive statements this summer that will endear him to any sceptical Liverpool fans. The future of Mo Salah remains up in the air, with the Egyptian forward eligible to leave for free next year and expected to be soon be targeted again by the Saudi Pro League.

Liverpool allowing Salah to stay without safeguarding against losing him for nothing would be financial suicide. At the very least, club chiefs must persuade their record Premier League scorer to sign an extension with a release clause - enabling him to shine for one more year at Anfield without the fear of a damaging departure.

And Slot can supplement that scenario by signing the much sought after Nico Williams. The Athletic Bilbao star tormented defences throughout Euro 2024, scoring in the final against England, and if Liverpool trigger his £55m release clause they will boast a fearsome front line.

The likes of Ben Doak and Fabio Carvalho could be offloaded to fund the deal, but if Luis Diaz can be persuaded to resist the clutches of Barcelona, Liverpool will again have the potential to thrill going forward. Cody Gakpo also enhanced his reputation at the Euros, and if Darwin Nunez can finally find the consistency in front of goal fans crave, and Diogo Jota stays fit, the goals will come from everywhere.

Liverpool's dream 2024/25 squad: Alisson, Kelleher, Jaros; Alexander-Arnold, Bradley, Gomez, Van Dijk, Konate, Quansah, Guehi, Robertson, Tsimikas; Endo, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Jones, Elliott, Gravenberch, Bajcetic; Diaz, Nunez, Salah, Gakpo, Jota, Williams.
