Jordan Henderson has got in touch with a former Liverpool team-mate this week and wished Thiago Alcantara luck as he edges towards a new role following his retirement.

The Ex-Liverpool midfielder announced that he would be hanging his boots up earlier this week. In an emotional statement on Instagram, Thiago wrote: "I will always be willing to give back what I have been given and I am grateful for the time I have enjoyed it."

"Thank you, football. And to all who accompanied me and made me a better player and person along the way. See you soon, Thiago."

The Spaniard has received plenty of well-wishes from a whole host of former teammates. Ex-Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was among those and wrote: "What a player and a great person. It was a pleasure to play with you. Good luck with your next chapter my friend."

Alexis Mac Allister was also among the current Reds to send Thiago some kind words. The Argentine playmaker expressed his regret at not being able to play with him for longer. Thiago appeared just once during Mac Allister's debut season at Anfield as he struggled with constant injury issues.

He wrote: "I'll stay wanting to play next to you but some drills were enough to see what you're capable of with a soccer ball up close. Thank you for everything you gave to football and good luck in this new stage of your life!"

The well-wishes continued to come from Liverpool players. Darwin Nunez wrote: "Thanks for everything brother! The soccer world will miss you. Best wishes to you and your family."

Andy Robertson followed that up with: "What a player, what a career! Enjoy retirement my friend," while Diogo Jota said: "What a player. A big hug friend."

While Thiago has only just announced his retirement, it appears that he could be set to take a new role soon. The Athletic report that Barcelona boss Hansi Flick wants him as part of his coaching staff.

Thiago is apparently considering the offer. The former midfielder made over 100 appearances for the Catalan giants after graduating from their famed La Masia academy.

He won four league titles and the Champions League ahead of a move to join German side Bayern Munich in 2013. While he was given a number of well-wishes from former teammates following his retirement, a number of rivals also sent their messages. Former Man United and Spain stars Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and David de Gea also responded.
