Five Scottish football fans en route to Euro 2024 have been injured in a horrific head-on car crash after allegedly forgetting that in Germany, cars drive on the right side of the road.

Two of the supporters are believed to be seriously hurt following the collision near Weeze airport, roughly 45 miles from Dusseldorf. Emergency services, including four ambulances, rushed to the scene on Thursday night, with images from the incident showing multiple casualties receiving treatment on the roadside and a grassy verge.

The fans had flown in from Edinburgh, landing around 11pm, and collected a hire car from the airport - only to mistakenly drive on the wrong side of the road in a dark Citroen.

Their vehicle collided with a black Mercedes, whose driver also required medical attention at the scene.

An anonymous source told the Daily Record: "They landed in Weeze with Ryanair from Edinburgh at 11pm. They picked up their rental car directly at Weeze Airport, packed numerous suitcases and drove off, but forgot that in Germany you drive on the right.

"At the airport, after just a few hundred metres of driving, they crashed head-on into an oncoming Mercedes. All five football fans were injured, some seriously, and had to receive emergency medical care at the scene of the accident before being transported to various hospitals.

"Numerous rescue teams were on duty until 2am this morning; the two vehicles were totally damaged and had to be rescued."

A local fire department representative stated: "Shortly after midnight, a serious traffic accident occurred on the airport ring in which two vehicles collided head-on. A total of six injured people, two of them seriously, were treated by the emergency services. We wish those affected a speedy and complete recovery."

The Scotland team, who have never advanced beyond the group stage in their prior eleven tournament attempts, kick off the Euros against the host team in Munich tonight. With an estimated 100,000 fans trekking to watch, they will also compete with Hungary and Switzerland in Group A.
