Harry Kane may be put in awkward situation by Bundesliga and Arsenal fans will love it
Harry Kane could be put in an awkward position at the end of what might be a trophyless first season at Bayern Munich.
Harry Kane could be left red-faced even if he wins the Bundesliga’s top-scorer award this season because of an unusual connection to former Tottenham Hotspur rivals Arsenal. While Bayern Munich have struggled at times this term, Kane’s form has remained exemplary, with the England captain on course to finish the season with upwards of 40 goals.
It’s safe to say Kane’s move to Bayern hasn’t exactly gone to plan. At least not in the league anyway, with the record German champions trailing leaders Bayer Leverkusen. Failure to claw back the hefty deficit and lift the Bundesliga title would come as a major disappointment to Bayern, not least considering they’ve topped the German first-tier in each of the last 11 seasons.
It hasn’t been for the want of trying as far as Kane is concerned though, with the ex-Spurs ace having scored for fun since joining the Bavarian outfit.
Across 34 appearances for Bayern this season, the £100million man has found the net on 36 occasions, with an impressive 30 of those goals coming in the Bundesliga itself. He scored a hat-trick on Saturday in an 8-1 thrashing of Mainz.
Unsurprisingly, Kane leads the way as the division’s top scorer, five goals clear of second-placed Serhou Guirassy. But if - as is expected - Kane finishes top of the scoring charts at the end of the Bundesliga season, the London-born star could find himself in an awkward situation.
That’s because the award handed out to Germany’s highest goalscorer each season bears a remarkable resemblance to the cannon on Arsenal’s crest. As a former Tottenham legend, this could turn out to be a little embarrassing for Kane, especially if it’s the only trophy he gets his hands on this season.
The 30-year-old will be hoping that isn’t the case. While they’ve already been knocked out of the DFB Pokal, Bayern still remain in the Bundesliga title race, but it will take a monumental effort from Thomas Tuchel’s side to catch runaway leaders Leverkusen.
However, with less than three months of the campaign remaining, it appears Bayern and Kane’s best chance of silverware this season will come in the Champions League, with the German giants having progressed through to the quarter-final stage in midweek.
Bayern are the bookies’ third favourite to win the competition, behind record holders Real Madrid and reigning champions Manchester City, and given the final is being held in Kane’s native England, it could prove the fairytale ending to an otherwise difficult first season in Germany.
