Liverpool have reportedly drawn up a two-man shortlist of alternatives to Xabi Alonso if the Bayer Leverkusen boss opts against succeeding Jurgen Klopp next season. Alonso is also said to be of interest to Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, with Thomas Tuchel set to depart the German giants at the end of the campaign.
The Telegraph claim that Liverpool eye Julian Nagelsmann and Ruben Amorim as potential options to take over at Anfield next season, if their preferred option of Alonso cannot be convinced of a return to the club.
That has forced Liverpool to consider alternatives, with Amorim and Naglesmann being eyed. Sporting boss Amorim is seen as one of Europe's brightest young coaches and performs exceptionally well on the metrics Liverpool will use to decide their next manager.

They would have to pay compensation to prise Amorim away from Sporting, however, which is one downside compared to Nagelsmann who is out of contract with the German national team after Euro 2024.
Despite Nagelsmann's swift end to his tenure at Bayern, he remains well-liked by the Liverpool hierarchy and had his pick of clubs after leading RB Leipzig on their journey to becoming one of Germany's top teams.

Nagelsmann will not be able to take up any position until Germany's campaign come to an end, which could be as late as July 14 if they make the final in Berlin.
Another key decision that needs to be made is Liverpool's next sporting director. Jorg Schmadtke is leaving the club with Klopp and the person holding that role typically is one of the major voices that decides the next head coach.
They likely will need to make an appointment in that area before pursuing either Alonso, Amorim or Nagelsmann, while rivals such as Barcelona and Bayern already have behind-the-scenes systems in place.
