Darren Ferguson is determined to take Preston to the Premier League
Ferguson Jnr took over the Deepdale hot seat last week determined to
nudge north end into the Premier League.
He hopes achieving his goal of guiding Preston to the promised land
will force people to start talking about his ability rather than his
bloodline.
He said: “It so happens I’m following my father in football but I’m my own man and I want my own identity.
“With my name though you can’t afford to fail. People do ask me about having my father’s name but it is my name as well.
“It’s something I know is there and will never go away. My name is never going to change.
“So that is maybe a little bit more of an incentive for me to succeed.
I know I have a good work ethic and so have my staff, and we will work
as hard as we can to get Preston where we want to be.”
Despite his desire to distance himself from his father’s achievements
Ferguson will not be shy in asking for loan players with England
under-20 striker Febian Brandy on his wish-list.
He struggled to persuade united players to join him at former club Peterborough during their rise through the leagues.
But Ferguson added: “generally Manchester United players are not going to a League one or League Two club.
“But now I’m in the Championship we’ll have to wait and see.’’
Even though he was in the frame to replace Owen Coyle at Burnley.
That’s because Fergie reckons he is better off learning his trade at
Deepdale.
Preston are currently midtable but he believes he can lift them into the promotion chase this season.
He said: “I would say this is a better progression for me as a manager than going straight to a Premier League
club.
“I’m in it for a long time and I feel Preston is a really good
established football club. There are good people here and I’m looking
forward to working with them.
“The squad has got a good blend of youth and experience. We’ve lost
Paul McKenna from the team that got to the play-offs last year but if
we get a couple of results and the confidence picks up who knows what
will happen.
“I’ve looked at the squad in depth and I know them very well and I hope to get them going.
“One of the attractions of coming here is we have a game in hand and plenty of games to go.
“It’s a close league and anyone that goes on a run, especially around
March time, has a chance.” one of his first tasks is deciding on the
future of sean st Ledger.
The Irish international defender failed to complete a £4.5million move
to Middlesbrough when he fell out with new boss Gordon Strachan but
Celtic are interested. Fergie Jnr’s determined to succeed
