Bruno Fernandes has explained Manchester United's new penalty regime that has been recently introduced under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - after the Portugal star missed a crucial spot-kick in the 1-0 home loss to Aston Villa on Saturday.
Fernandes, who has been United's designated spot-kick taker since his arrival in January 2020, was afforded the chance to equalise against Villa after a 94th-minute penalty was awarded following a Kortney Hause handball.
The ex-Sporting Lisbon midfielder, 27, missed just his second United penalty from 23 attempts in front of a sold-out Old Trafford.
Generally ever so reliable from the spot, it was almost unbelievable to gauge just how high Fernandes put his spot-kick.
The miss sparked rumours that new signing Cristiano Ronaldo would instead be put on penalty duties.
But Fernandes has since opened up and claimed that it was to be him taking responsibility for the game against Villarreal.

United didn't need a penalty to beat the Spanish outfit as Ronaldo scored in the last minute to gain a memorable victory.
However, Fernandes has claimed he would've been the man to step up should an opportunity have risen.

Fernandes sent out ahuge statementabout how he will come back stronger following his miss against Villa.
“Nobody is more frustrated and disappointed than me for missing the penalty and the consequent defeat,” he wrote.
“I’ve always assumed my responsibilities and I've always embraced them under pressure in moments like this.
“Today, I failed. But I took a step forward and faced the challenge with the same ambition and responsibility as when, on the many other occasions, the ball ended up in the net."
