Champions League team of the night: Man City, Tottenham dominate with PSG star in line-up
Champions League football is back after the international break, and Manchester City, Real Madrid, PSG and Tottenham all picked up wins on Tuesday. Express Sport reveals the players that performed particularly well and made the Champions League team of the night.
Manchester City and Tottenham both smashed five goals past their respective opponents on Tuesday night.
Raheem Sterling bagged himself a hat-trick, while Sergio Aguero got a brace at the Etihad.
Their evening was soured late on, however, as Phil Foden received a red card on a rare start for the youngster.
Tottenham also had an impressive evening of their own, as they beat Red Star 5-0 at home.
Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min both scored twice, with Erik Lamela completing the rout.
PSG got in on the act, too, with a 5-0 win over Club Brugge away from home.
Kylian Mbappe came on as a substitute, before getting a hat-trick and an assist to one of Mauro Icardi’s two goals.
This is Express Sport’s Champions League team of the night.
GK - Paulo Gazzaniga
Tottenham put in a brilliant performance, meaning Gazzaniga didn’t have much to do. When he did, however, he dealt with all the problems thrown at him by Red Star.
RB - Thomas Meunier
PSG had a good game from top to bottom against Club Brugge, with Meunier putting in a solid performance on the right flank.
CB - Raphael Varane
Real Madrid secured a key win away from home over Galatasaray, with Varane having a good game at the back.
CB - Davison Sanchez
Spurs have four players in this team of the night, but there’s no surprise considering how well they played. Sanchez had a great game, preventing Red Star from creating anything going forward.
LB - Benjamin Mendy
Man City star Mendy went off after 70 minutes, but still had a good game beforehand. The Frenchman is still recovering from a knee injury.
CM - Tanguy Ndombele
Spurs’ record signing was brilliant once again on Tuesday night, dominating the midfield and playing a string of key passes around the park.
CM - Corentin Tolisso
Despite only being a substitute, Tolisso deserves his place in the team after scoring the winner for Bayern Munich over Olympiacos just days after a heart attack scare.
CM - Toni Kroos
With Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane currently under fire at the Bernabeu, they desperately needed a result against Galatasaray. Kroos provided that after scoring the winner with a nice finish into the top corner.
LW - Son Heung-Min
Tottenham got off to a lightning start against Red Star, racing to a 3-0 lead before half-time. Son grabbed two of the goals in a 30-minute blitz.
ST - Kylian Mbappe
Having come on as a second-half substitute, Mbappe turned on the style with an incredible hat-trick, while also getting an assist for one of Icardi’s goals.
RW - Raheem Sterling
Despite his post-match admission that he could have scored four, Sterling was sublime at the Etihad, getting a hat-trick in the 5-1 rout.
