Smalling failed to make any of United’s first three matchday squads in the Premier League this season.
He is United’s longest-serving player after joining the club from Fulham in 2010 for £7m.
He was a regular for Solskjaer last season at United, but has ultimately fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford since the arrival of Harry Maguire.
United bought Maguire for £80m from Leicester City this summer, making him the most expensive defender in history.
