HARRY MAGUIRE has outlined his desire to make Old Trafford a fortress after the spectacular 4-0 demolition of Chelsea on Sunday.
Man Utd: Solskjaer praises ‘excellent’ team after Chelsea win
Manchester United beat Frank Lampard’s Chelsea 4-0 with two goals from Marcus Rashford and one each for Anthony Martial and Daniel James.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side went on to keep a clean sheet in their first home game of the season, as the world’s most expensive defender impressed.
England international Maguire has praised his team-mates after earning the man of the match award, but also descibed how the home side had to ride their luck.
"It's a great start for myself and the team,” he told Sky Sports.
“We rode our luck a bit in the first half but in the second half we were a lot better and I think we thoroughly deserved the three points.
"I was reiterating on the pitch even at 3-0 and 4-0 that we wanted a clean sheet.
“We have to make this place a fortress and a hard place to come and score."
Former United boss Jose Mourinho picked out the 26-year-old defender as the best player on the pitch, and mentioned his impressive partnership with Victor Lindelof.
He told Sky Sports: "You can be very dangerous in attack but if you feel that a mistake is around the corner it takes your confidence away and you don't play as well.
“When you feel there is something that allows you to play you are much more confident.
"As I always said Lindelof can be a very good player.
"With Maguire it can be a very good partnership."
Although United ended the game with a comfortable scoreline, Lampard outlined mistakes from his team as the most important factor in the result.
He said: "It was nowhere near a 4-0.
“Four mistakes for the goals, but we controlled major parts of the first half. We hit the woodwork, poor decisions in the final third, we should be in the lead at half-time.
"They are a counter-attacking team, it’s a big strength, they have pace, and if you give them opportunities they will counter. For massive parts of the game we didn’t allow them to do that. Loads of lessons for us.”
