Man United: Mike Phelan says return to club has been 'terrific'
Manchester United coach Phelan has talked with Woodward about becoming the club’s first-ever technical director, as they plot a route back to the summit of the English game.
The Red Devils are in sore need of a revamp, with Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield the latest bad result under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Manchester United are eager to restructure behind the scenes with Woodward belatedly realising they need extra hands on board.
For too long, the club have settled for mediocrity under managers David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.
And Sunday’s dire draw with Huddersfield left United fans outraged.
Phelan could switch from Solskjaer’s No 2 to technical director at the end of the season as part of any revamp.
And former Ireland manager Brian Kerr has claimed he has talked with Phelan about the current situation, with the United assistant taking aim at Woodward by saying ‘the picture is always changing.’
"Even Mike Phelan said to me there [yesterday] - the picture changes from week to week,” he said.
“I was asking him if he's going to take the role of the technical director and he said 'I don't know, they haven't spoken to me.

Solskjaer also believes United must fix their defensive problems, adding: "In a stadium like this with loads of energy, their last game of the season at home, we gave them some hope and we couldn't reach our level again.
"The goal was very avoidable, we've conceded too many of those this season.
"Everton, Wolves, today - its something we must look at and improve on and not do that next season.
"There was always going to be a period in this game Huddersfield would press us because of the energy of the crowd.
"We had a spell we couldn't get going, now its done, we're disappointed but we have to look forward."
