Liverpool winning goal vs Newcastle should NOT have counted - Souness makes revelation
LIVERPOOL’s late winning goal against Newcastle should not have counted, claims Reds legend Graeme Souness.
Liverpool vs Newcastle: Jurgen Klopp reacts to 3-2 victory
Liverpool beat Newcastle 3-2 at St James’ Park to go back top of the Premier League table.
At first glance it appeared to be Divock Origi to head home the winner, but replays showed it in fact came off Magpies captain Jamaal Lascelles.
But Souness says the initial free kick which led to the goal should not have been awarded.
Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie was deemed to have fouled Fabinho but Souness claimed the officials got the decision wrong.
The goal, the free kick leading up to the winning goal shouldn’t have been given
“The goal, the free kick leading up to the winning goal shouldn’t have been given,” he said on Sky Sports.
“Matt Ritchie will be cursing this. Watch this from several angles.
“We’ll see it, there it looks a foul, but watch it from the next angle.
“How that linesman can give it, watch this. You don’t fall like that.
“It’s even better this time, watch. That’s not a foul.
“Now look at the linesman, what is the linesman seeing there that he can possibly give a foul for?”
Souness admitted Liverpool were lucky, something they were not against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday.
“They got lucky tonight but they had no luck on Wednesday night,” he added.
Newcastle vs Liverpool: Benitez on Alexander-Arnold ‘hand ball’
“That’s football for you. They weren’t at it, the obvious reason, the manager will say it, is that they were tired.
“They looked tired. Liverpool are a high-energy team that get after you.
“Tonight they were second to lots of stuff, Newcastle more aggressive, quicker to things.
“Newcastle will think ‘we’re unlucky tonight’.”
