Liverpool player ratings vs Newcastle: Salah SHINES despite injury, THREE stars struggle
LIVERPOOL left it late to keep their title hopes alive with a 3-2 win at Newcastle, but how did their players rate at St James' Park?
Jurgen Klopp’s side took the lead in the first half when Virgil van Dijk powered home Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner.
But Newcastle responded well and levelled through Christian Atsu in controversial fashion.
Salomon Rondon had diverted the ball goalwards before Alexander-Arnold handled it off the line.
Mohamed Salah restored the lead when he cutely finished from the right-back’s inviting delivery. He was later stretched off through injury.
Rondon levelled things up himself in the second half before Jamaal Lascelles diverted the ball into his own net from Xherdan Shaqiri’s free kick to gift Liverpool all three points.
Alisson - 6
Wasn’t much he could do about either goal, some crisp passes out from the back under pressure.
Trent Alexander-Arnold 8
He could count himself lucky to stay on the field, but he provided two sublime deliveries to assist Van Dijk and Salah.
Dejan Lovren - 6
Struggled up against Rondon at times who made his presence felt.
Virgil van Dijk - 7
Colossal header for the opening goal, but like Lovren, was given a tough evening by the Venezuelan target man.
Andy Robertson - 7
Another fine performance from the flying full-back, his relentless pressing and energy helped Liverpool turn defence into attack.
Fabinho - 5
Sloppy in possession, misplacing a number of passes as the Reds struggled to gain control in the middle of the park.
Jordan Henderson - 5
With the majority of the play taking place on the flanks, the Liverpool captain failed to make an impact in the engine room.
Gini Wijnaldum - 6
Kept things ticking but slowed things down at times when they needed to be sped up. Subbed off for Xherdan Shaqiri.
Sadio Mane - 6
Frustrating evening on Tyneside for Mane. He squandered a big chance to make it 3-1 in the first half, firing straight at Martin Dubravka.
Daniel Sturridge - 5
Showed his quality in glimpses with a few nice passes with he outside of his boot but locked sharpness in front of goal.
Mohamed Salah - 7
Followed up a good personal performance at the Camp Nou besides hitting the post, took his goal expertly. Forced off after a nasty clash with Dubravka.
