The 30-year-old has sporadically captained the side, however, such is his seniority among the ranks, and is finally showing the sort of form Emery desired.
“He’s working very well, playing very well,” Emery said ahead of Arsenal's trip to Everton on Sunday.
“He’s helping us, I’m very happy with him. I think the team has a good atmosphere, good spirit with each player helping us with their qualities and good behaviour.
“That’s the spirit I want, they are doing that, and Mesut is like the others [in that regard].”

Ozil signed a £350,000-a-week deal until June 2021 15 months ago but has not reflected his worth since.
“Clearly there have been troubles settling into the new way of playing under Unai Emery,” the BBC Sport reporter told the Arseblog podcast in February.
“I have been told that Emery has expressed to Ozil that it might be better for him to leave.

“What we don’t know is whether that was the feeling of Emery, the feeling of the hierarchy, or whether it was the feeling of both of them.
“I suspect it was probably the feeling of both of them. However, if one party felt it more than the other, I would suspect it was the hierarchy.
“Ozil’s view was ‘I’m not leaving, certainly not in the January transfer window’ and obviously everybody will see what happens in the summer.”
