Arsenal news: Jermaine Jenas criticises Bernd Leno for this moment against Tottenham
ARSENAL goalkeeper Bernd Leno has been criticised for his role in Tottenham winning a penalty in Saturday’s north London derby.
Tottenham and Arsenal played out a controversial 1-1 draw at Wembley.
Aaron Ramsey’s first-half goal was cancelled out by Harry Kane’s second-half penalty.
However, replays showed Kane was offside when he was fouled by Shkodran Mustafi in the box to win the spot kick.
But ex-Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas reckons Leno should have been further off his line to put doubt in the mind of Christian Eriksen, who took the free kick.
The whole point of having a high line is that the keeper comes out a little bit
“My issue is that when you have a high line like that, I’m not happy with Leno’s position,” Jenas said on BT Sport.
“He’s far too deep onto his line.
“The whole point of having a high line is that the keeper comes out a little bit.
“What that tells you and Christian Eriksen is there’s not that much space to stick that in there.
“And it makes you not really able to float it in.”
Earlier Leno had pulled off a stunning double save to first keep out Eriksen and then Moussa Sissoko.
And former Arsenal defender Martin Keown says the goalkeeper has proven he is good enough for the Gunners.
“Is he at the level? That’s what I wondered,” Keown said at half time.
“But actually I think with this save he’s definitely arrived now.
“The first one’s a good one but this is outstanding.
“Reflex save, tips it over the bar, superb.
“Outstanding save. He sees it really late as well.”
