Man Utd news: Glazers may SACK Ed Woodward if he makes THIS mistake - Andy Gray
MANCHESTER UNITED’s hierarchy may lose their jobs if the next managerial appointment does not turn out to be successful, claims former Aston Villa and Wolves star Andy Gray.
Manchester United have to get the right manager says Andy Gray
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the favourite to land the Manchester United job on a permanent basis.
Solskjaer is the current interim boss and has won 10 of his 12 games in charge since the sacking of Jose Mourinho in December.
However, Gray says the United hierarchy, headed up by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, must not rush into appointing the Norwegian.
Gray claims the board must look at all options on the table as the next decision could end up costing their jobs.
If they get this one wrong then I think the hierarchy are in trouble, they might lose their jobs
“I don’t think anyone at Old Trafford, the hierarchy I’m talking about, are getting carried away,” the pundit told beIN SPORTS.
“What I think they’re doing is enjoying what’s happening at Manchester United, why wouldn’t you?
“Manchester United fans have not had this kind of feeling certainly all season and maybe not for two or three seasons under Jose.
“So they’ve got the feel-good factor back at Manchester United, Ole’s doing a really good job.
“I think the next five weeks might determine whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mike Phelan and Michael Carrick are asked to continue and take Manchester United forward.
“But it’s not as easy a decision as it may look from the outside.
“Because he’s doing so well everyone’s saying ‘give him the job’.
“No I think you can get carried away by the bounce that they’ve had, give him the job, and six months down the line next December they might be looking for another coach again.
“They don’t want to do that. It’s got to be for the long run.
“If they get this one wrong then I think the hierarchy are in trouble, they might lose their jobs.
“So they’ve got to get the next full-time appointment absolutely right.”
Gray says Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, as well as ex-Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane and former United defender Laurent Blanc, should be under consideration.
“That’s why I think Pochettino isn’t out of the frame yet, people like that,” he continued.
“Zidane isn’t out the frame yet, people like that. Maybe Laurent Blanc might not be out of the frame yet.
“These are all guys I think they’ve got to consider.”
Solskjaer suffered his first defeat as United boss on Tuesday, seeing his side go down 2-0 at home to PSG in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
They will look to bounce back on Monday when they face Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round at Stamford Bridge.
