Man Utd news: Arsene Wenger pinpoints one United weakness that caused PSG defeat
MANCHESTER UNITED were dominated in midfield by PSG and that is ultimately why they lost their first-leg tie, claims Arsene Wenger.
Man Utd: Pogba LACKS discipline says Arsene Wenger
PSG came away from Old Trafford with a 2-0 aggregate lead from the Champions League last-16 tie.
Goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe in the space of seven second-half minutes have put Manchester United’s chances of progression in serious doubt.
PSG were without star forwards Neymar and Edinson Cavani due to injury.
But legendary Arsenal boss Wenger says that actually helped the visitors as they were able to pack the midfield and dominate United.
The whole evening Man United was dominated in midfield
And the Frenchman says the gap in quality between the two sides was clear to see.
“In the Champions League an important thing is that you cannot be dominated in midfield,” Arsene Wenger said on beIN SPORTS.
“And the whole evening Man United was dominated in midfield.
“Paris Saint-Germain played with five midfielders and they never lost the ball.
“Manchester United could never win the ball back and when they had the ball they lost it very quickly because Paris Saint-Germain dominated the midfield to win the ball back.
“They lost the ball there in midfield and when you play at home and you cannot keep the ball, you’re always in trouble.
“That’s what happened today, Man United look really poor in midfield compared to the class of Paris Saint-Germain.
“And basically, it was a little advantage for Paris Saint-Germain to play with five midfielders tonight and less offensive players.
“The difference technically and speed of understanding of the game between the two teams was huge and became bigger as the game went on.
“Man United played at home and had one shot on goal in a Champions League game.
“That of course tells you the difference of the two teams.”
United will be without midfielder Paul Pogba for the second leg on March 6 as he was sent off late on at Old Trafford.
They are next in action on Monday when they visit Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round.
