Man Utd news: Danny Murphy reveals the ONE star who can win United title… next season
MANCHESTER UNITED can rely on Marcus Rashford to score the goals to lead them to a title challenge next season.
That is the opinion of former England, Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy.
Rashford has hit a rich vein of form since the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United interim boss.
The 21-year-old has started all eight Premier League games under Solskjaer, scoring in six of them.
Rashford has been given a starting berth as the central striker in the majority of those matches ahead of Romelu Lukaku.
So when United are looking next season and can they mount a title challenge, what do they need? I think they can hang their hat on him
And Murphy believes United do not need to sign a forward this summer because they can rely on Marcus Rashford as their main goal-getter.
“I don’t think Man United need to worry about that area of the pitch anymore when they look at recruitment,” Murphy said on talkSPORT.
“Rashford is the answer, they do not need to look on the market now for a striker.
“If you look at the top three strikers in the country at the moment, [Mohamed] Salah, [Harry] Kane and [Sergio] Aguero, they regularly score goals it doesn’t matter of their playing well or playing badly, you can rely on them to score goals.
“Rashford hasn’t had the same longevity in that position to match their goals tally, but my view on him is he has absolutely everything he needs to be at that level.
“So when United are looking next season and can they mount a title challenge, what do they need?
“I think they can hang their hat on him. I think they can say, ‘there’s our number nine, and he’s going to be the one to get us 25 goals a season’.
“He’s still only 21, let's not forget about that.
“He doesn’t need to be someone who can be used in different positions. He can become the main striker who United can build their team around.”
Murphy reckons Lukaku will not be happy being second choice to Rashford and will look to leave Manchester United at the end of the season.
“I don’t think Lukaku will want to be a number two, he’ll want to be the main man somewhere,” he added.
“I think Rashford has become the main striker who plays in all the big games for Man United.
“And I don’t think Lukaku is going to sit around as Rashford’s understudy, I think he could go in the summer.”
