'They melted' - Paul Merson slams Tottenham stars and reveals why they won't win the title
TOTTENHAM do not play like a Premier League winning team.
That is the opinion of former Arsenal player and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.
Spurs remain firmly in the title mix and are just six points behind league leaders Liverpool.
Mauricio Pochettino will still be kicking himself though that his side were beaten at home by Wolves in late December.
Three points there would have given his side a serious chance of winning the Premier League title.
Merson has hit out the shock defeat stating that it’s made him question their credentials to go the distance.
“In this day and age they are all never going to have to work again, you want to win something,” he told Sky Sports News.
“The pressure was on them against Wolves, they are in with a chance of winning the Premier League. They melted.
“People say they were tired, tired? Three days later they ripped Cardiff apart in 20 minutes.
“That’s not a lot of sleep in three days, everyone is fresh again.”
The Soccer Saturday man then hit out at Spurs’ playing style, stating that they do not playing like champions.
“When they played Chelsea, they hung on in the end,” he added.
“I didn’t see a Premier League winning team there in the way they were playing.
“They were literally just kicking the ball up the field and waiting for Chelsea to come back.”
Spurs edged Maurizio Sarri’s side 1-0 in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
Harry Kane grabbed the winner from the penalty spot with the assistance of VAR after he was brought down by Kepa Arizabalaga.
The competition is perhaps Tottenham’s greatest chance of winning a first trophy under Pochettino.
“They need to win something, Manchester City and Chelsea are in the way of that [Carabao Cup] but these players will want to win something,” Merson concluded.
