Roy Keane sends huge message to Ed Woodward after Man Utd lose to Liverpool
MANCHESTER UNITED must back Jose Mourinho in the upcoming transfer window and sign some new defenders.
That is the verdict of Manchester United hero Roy Keane, who was speaking after Sunday’s loss to Liverpool.
Liverpool beat the Red Devils 3-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Xherdan Shaqiri (2).
The defeat meant United are now 19 points adrift of their rivals who have returned to the top of the table.
United boss Mourinho was left frustrated with the club’s transfer business in the summer.
They’ve not been good enough. Go buy some more, you’re Man United, huge club
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward failed to bring in a centre-back the Portuguese manager craved.
There have been rumours of discontent amongst the United dressing room since the start of the season, especially surrounding the future of Paul Pogba.
Keane believes Pogba should be sold next summer but says bringing in defenders is a more pressing matter that must be done as soon as possible.
“I think there’s one or two problems obviously with players not on top form,” he said on Sky Sports.
“The obvious one being Pogba. Pogba sitting on the bench today (against Liverpool), watching that game and not getting on.
“You’re thinking his days must be numbered.
“I don’t think they will do anything with Pogba in January but come the summer, you move them on.
"It’s no big deal, he’s left Man United before.
“I believe the players that were out there today were giving their best, I just think they’re short. Defensively they’re short.
“I know people say ‘they’ve already spent money on some defenders’ but they’ve not been good enough.
“Go buy some more, you’re Man United, huge club.”
