Man Utd news: ‘Nowhere near good enough’ - Roy Keane singles out star against Liverpool
MANCHESTER UNITED star Ashley Young is “nowhere near good enough” defensively - and he showed it against Liverpool on Sunday.
Mourinho: 'I am not upset' following loss to Liverpool
That is according to Manchester United legend Roy Keane, who was working as a pundit for the match at Anfield.
Liverpool dominated the early stages and took the lead through Sadio Mane.
Fabinho found Mane with a delightful lofted through ball and the Senegalese finished with aplomb.
However, Young played the Liverpool man onside and failed to track his run into the box.
I know that’s not his natural position but nowhere near good enough
Young spent the majority of his career as a winger before Mourinho started using him as a full-back last season.
The 33-year-old started Sunday's clash at left wing-back as Mourinho once again chose to play with three central defenders.
Keane admits it is not Young's natural role on the pitch but it did not stop him venting his frustration at half time.
“Well defensively he’s not up to it,” Keane said of Young on Sky Sports.
“I know that’s not his natural position but nowhere near good enough.
“He makes a lot of them types of mistakes.
“He sees it, he actually makes the original tackle, he gets back in, maybe he’s not concentrating.
“You need to be able to sense danger and I don’t think he has that.
“You smell it, you sense it, you feel it in your bones.
“A great goal from Liverpool’s point of view but Young just let him run off, far too easy.
“But we felt the goal was coming because Liverpool were dominating.”
Liverpool went on to win the game 3-1 thanks to a second-half brace from Xherdan Shaqiri.
The Reds have returned to the top of the table, one point clear of Manchester City.
