Man Utd news: Memphis Depay could be like Liverpool star Mo Salah if he returns - Merson
MEMPHIS DEPAY could return to the Premier League a different player - just like how Mohamed Salah did at Liverpool.
Memphis Depay heads to training with Dutch national team
That is according to Arsenal hero turned Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.
Depay has been linked with a move back to Manchester United less than two years after leaving the club.
The Dutchman spent 18 months at Old Trafford before leaving to join French side Lyon in January 2017.
Depay has impressed during his time in Ligue 1 and United are said to have inserted a buyback clause when he left the club.
We’ve seen Salah leave Chelsea, go away for a year or two, come back a different player. So it can happen
Merson has compared any potential deal for Depay to Salah, who initially left Chelsea in 2016 to join Roma.
The Egyptian returned to England in the summer of 2017 to join Liverpool and had a sensational debut campaign, scoring 44 goals.
Merson is a fan of Depay and reckons he has improved since leaving United but admits it would be poor business from them.
Asked if United need Depay, he said: “Not really, I wouldn’t have said so.
“Yeah (he’s confident), he’s always been confident. You hear the stories about him and he’s a confident boy.
“It is a different league out there, it is a different league. But he’s a year, two years older.
“We’ve seen other players do it, we’ve seen Salah leave Chelsea, go away for a year or two, come back a different player. So it can happen.
“But it doesn’t look good on Manchester United does it?
"They did it with (Paul) Pogba, they let him go for a cup of tea and then they had to pay millions and millions.
“You’ve got to have a little bit more vision about yourself really in my opinion.
“I’m not saying he’s not a good player, I do like him.
“But he left for a reason didn’t he, they let him go for a reason.”
United drew 0-0 at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, while Salah scored in Liverpool's 3-0 victory at Watford.
