Modric faces competition from Mohamed Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the prize.
FIFA created the awards in 2016 after they parted with France Football, who famously award the Ballon d’Or.
FIFA and France Football teamed up for six years, from 2010 to 2015, to award the FIFA Ballon d’Or, but there are once more two separate gongs for the globe’s best ballplayer.
Ahead of the ceremony this evening, there are reports in Spain that Modric is expected to secure the award.
The Croatian won the World Cup Golden Ball for leading his unfancied side to the final in Moscow, while he also claimed UEFA’s Player of the Year award last month.
If the midfielder wins tonight, he will become the first player in 10 years to stop Ronaldo or Lionel Messi from winning the title.
It is likely that will be a reality, according to reports in Spain.
That is chiefly because Cristiano Ronaldo will not be attending the ceremony.

The Portuguese star did the same last month in Monaco when he was nominated for the UEFA Player of the Year award.
That was reportedly because he discovered he would not be winning the trophy, and therefore decided to not attend the ceremony.
“The bets are on Luka Modric,” Spanish newspaper Marca reported.
“Having won the Champions League with Real Madrid and reached the World Cup final with Croatia, only to be beaten despite his spectacular performances.”

Meanwhile, Didier Deschamps is expected to take the Best Coach award over Zinedine Zidane - who won a third consecutive European Cup - and Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic.
The best goalkeeper nominees include Thibaut Courtois, Hugo Lloris and - bizarrely - Kasper Schmeichel.
Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Benjamin Pavard are among the players in contention for Goal of the Year.
