Man Utd news: Andy Gray explains shock manager choice to replace Jose Mourinho
MANCHESTER UNITED would not be a challenge that would faze Roberto Martinez - and that is why he would be the perfect replacement for Jose Mourinho.
Man Utd: Roberto Martinez should replace Mourinho says Gray
That is the opinion of former Aston Villa and Everton striker turned TV pundit Andy Gray.
Gray grabbed the headlines last week when he picked Martinez as the man who he thinks should replace Mourinho.
And now the former Scotland international has explained his decision.
Martinez is currently the manager of Belgium and Gray reckons he has all the characteristics and experience needed for the Manchester United job.
He’s also managed some of the best players in world football for the last two years with Belgium. So that proves he can handle best players.
“Why? They’ve tried experienced, talented coaches already, like (Louis) Van Gaal and Mourinho,” Gray said on beIN SPORTS.
“It hasn’t worked really for either of them, so far.
“What has Roberto Martinez got? He’s got a wealth of experience of English football, a wealth of experience in the Premier League.
“He has won a major trophy with Wigan, the FA Cup. He’s managed a top-six club in Everton.
“He’s also managed some of the best players in world football for the last two years with Belgium. So that proves he can handle best players.
“He took Belgium to the semi-final of the World Cup on a run over two years where I think they lost two years where I think they lost one game up until when they entered the World Cup finals.
“You need to be big enough to walk into that club and say ‘I’m not phased by Manchester United’.
“I think he thinks so much of himself that he could do that, that’s what I’m saying.
“So that was my reasoning.”
Jose Mourinho has been under pressure at United after a difficult start to the season which has seen his team lose two of their first four games.
The Portuguese is the favourite to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job despite Sunday's 2-0 win at Burnley.
Two goals from Romelu Lukaku helped ease the pressure on Mourinho.
