Man Utd team news: Fans FREAK OUT as Phil Jones and Chris Smalling start against Spurs
MANCHESTER UNITED fans are baffled at Jose Mourinho’s squad to face Tottenham.
Manchester United vs Spurs: Pundits predict United win
Boss Mourinho has made six changes to the squad which suffered a humiliating defeat to Brighton last week.
Victor Lindelof drops to the bench while Eric Bailly is not even in the squad.
Phil Jones and Chris Smalling start in defence along with Nemanja Matic.
Juan Mata, Andreas Pereira and Anthony Martial have, like Bailly, also been dropped from the matchday squad.
Ander Herrera comes in while Marcus Rashford drops to the bench as Jesse Lingard starts.
Alexis Sanchez – who missed the defeat to Brighton through injury – has been named on the bench.
But it’s the Jones/Smalling inclusion in defence which has got many Manchester United fans riled up on Twitter.
“This is a p*** take,” one fan wrote. “Bailly had one bad game yet clearly our best defender. Our entire midfield was ass. Smalling and Jones have had a lot more than one terrible games.”
Another said: “Smalling and Jones at the back is terrible, went from Rio and Vidic to these pair of clowns. Can only see a Spurs win.”
“One bad game and we're back with Jones and Smalling. Bailly and Lindelof deserve a longer run than that,” a third fan wrote.
While one supporter joked: “The Chuckle brothers back together again.”
Explaining why he made so many changes to the squad which lost to Brighton, Mourinho told Sky Sports: “We didn't play well, we made mistakes, we change the team.
“The match before we played well, no mistakes, total control, deserved victory, we didn't change the team.
“If I don't play Valencia, Matic, Lingard when they are ready, I don't think you'd accept it, you'd ask why I didn't play important players if they were ready.”
