Arsenal manager Unai Emery reflects on loss to Chelsea
Arsenal entered a new era under Unai Emery last weekend as they played their first Premier League game without Arsene Wenger at the helm since 1996.
But they came off the worst against reigning champions Manchester City, with goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva sealing the win for Pep Guardiola’s men.
Arsenal were improved on Saturday as they took on London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge but ultimately suffered a 3-2 defeat.
Ex-Arsenal forward Giroud had a chance for Chelsea at the death but Petr Cech did well to block the Frenchman’s effort.
Speaking ahead of the loss which leaves Arsenal in 17th place, Merson identified Giroud as the sort of player his old side need.
"I think Olivier Giroud will end up being the starter [for Chelsea] because he gives them more of a focal point and knows how to play as more of a target man," Merson told the Daily Star.
"Ironically, that’s exactly what Arsenal need right now.
"Someone who can hold the ball up and put themselves about when it’s time to go long.
"Even Manchester City know when it’s time to do that, so watching Arsenal trying and failing to play out from the back against them was comical."
A striker of Giroud’s ilk would allow Arsenal to take the pressure off when they are being harried at the back.

Merson reckons it could take more than three transfer windows before Emery’s side have the players required to play out of defence though.
"It’s going to be hard work for them playing that way," Merson added.
"Pep Guardiola tried it in his first season and failed badly until he bought players who could do it properly.
"Arsenal don’t have the players to play that way.
"Emery’s trying to do it with players who just don't feel comfortable.
"It’s a recipe for disaster.
