Man Utd news: David de Gea transfer intentions questioned by Sky Sports man
DAVID DE GEA should only be thinking about Manchester United and there’s no other club better suited for him.
David De Gea discusses returning to pre-season training
That is the opinion of Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool midfielder Steve McMahon.
De Gea has been a long-running target for Real Madrid, but they clinched a deal for Chelsea shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois to all but end their interest in the Manchester United star.
While Florentino Perez has always coveted De Gea, recent reports have emerged indicating the Spanish goalkeeper will now put pen to paper on a new five-year contract.
De Gea’s contract expires next summer and it is believed that United chiefs are confident he will commit his future to the club.
The 27-year-old, who won the Premier League’s golden glove last term after keeping 18 clean sheets, has consistently been United’s best player over the past few seasons.
McMahon has been mightily impressed with De Gea’s form.
He believes that he should only be thinking about renewing with United rather than leaving as he is already at the perfect club for him.
“He’s a top, top keeper and the mere fact Courtois has gone to Real Madrid, that door has closed for De Gea,” McMahon said on Sky Sports’ The Debate when asked about De Gea’s future.
There’s no club other than Manchester United and he’s saved them
“Maybe he’s said ‘Get me a five-year contract!’
“Where else can he be? What club now suits De Gea?
“There’s no club other than Manchester United and he’s saved them.
“For him, they would have come sixth in the league given his record and the points he saved the club.”
Should De Gea sign a new deal with United, it is thought he could earn in excess of £200,000 a week.
He is currently earning around £180,000 a week, but his new contract could make him the highest-paid goalkeeper in the league.
De Gea’s new deal which would see him stay at the club until the 2021/22 season would also include a testimonial as he would have been at the club for 10 years.
United, who beat Leicester 2-1 on Friday night, face Brighton in their next league game on Sunday (4pm).
