The Premier League transfer window closed last Thursday and Jose Mourinho was left frustrated as his quest to sign a new centre-back ended in failure.
After seeing moves for Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and Leicester star Harry Maguire fall through, Mourinho scrambled around in the final few hours of deadline day in a desperate bid to strengthen his defence.
United even made a last-ditch attempt to try and sign Atletico Madrid veteran Godin and were prepared to meet his £22.3million release clause.
However, Godin rejected it outright and it is thought that the player’s agent tried to use United’s interest to get an improved deal for his client.

And speaking ahead of Atletico’s UEFA Super Cup game against Real on Wednesday (8pm), Godin denied signing a new deal with the La Liga outfit and revealed he did receive offers, although he was unsure where the United link came from.
“I have not renewed," Godin said.
“I have had offers, although I have decided to stay for personal reasons and I am only thinking about the final.

Although United brought in three new players, Mourinho was at a stand-off with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over transfers.
Stan Collymore believes Mourinho was to blame for United not being able to land their top targets.
“That is the reason United didn’t get the big-name central defender they were chasing on deadline day and not, as some have suggested, because they have lost their fizz or their cachet," the former Liverpool player told the Daily Mirror.
“Frank Clark got the best out of me at Nottingham Forest because he let me get away with little things and didn’t come for me all guns blazing, and he knew how to keep me happy.
