Liverpool news: How Chelsea and Arsenal showed it will be tough catching Man City - Wright
MANCHESTER CITY’s recent victories over Chelsea and Arsenal showed how tough a job Liverpool will have in trying to win the Premier League this season.
That is the view of Arsenal legend and BBC Sport pundit Ian Wright.
Manchester City are favourites ahead of Liverpool to win the title for a second successive season.
Pep Guardiola’s side started their campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win at Arsenal on Sunday, seven days after beating Chelsea by the same scoreline in the Community Shield.
Wright has been impressed with Liverpool and the new signings they have made.
The way Man City made Chelsea look ordinary and Arsenal, you have to say it’s going to take some performance to turn it round
But he says it will be difficult to claw back the 25-point difference they finished behind City last season.
“Firstly they’ve got to eat into that, that’s a massive amount of points to make up,” Wright said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“You have to say the goalkeeper is going to be a big difference.
“I think that when you look at goals from the midfield, they’ve now got (Xherdan) Shaqiri in there, Naby Keita can chip in with a few goals.
“So they’re going to get more goals from that area.
“You have to think that they might be able to eat into it, but they’ve got to sustain the way they’re playing and beat teams consistently for the whole season.
“The way Man City are and the way they made Chelsea look ordinary in the Community Shield and Arsenal, you have to say it’s going to take some performance to turn it round and beat them.
“They’ve strengthened in areas that are going to be beneficial to Liverpool, so that’s where they might be able to nick some points back.”
Liverpool won their opening game of the season on Sunday, beating West Ham 4-0 at Anfield.
Their next test will be a trip to Crystal Palace next Monday.
City's first home game of the season is on Sunday against Huddersfield (1.30pm).
Huddersfield lost their opener 3-0 to Chelsea last Saturday.
