Liverpool news: One new signing can lead Reds to Premier League title - Chris Sutton
LIVERPOOL goalkeeper Alisson will have a big say in whether his side can win the Premier League title this season.
That is the opinion of BBC Sport pundit and former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton.
Liverpool are the second favourites with the bookies to win the Premier League for the first time.
Manchester City are tipped to win the trophy for a second successive season under Pep Guardiola after finishing 19 points clear of second last term.
However, Liverpool have splashed over £175million on new talent and beat West Ham 4-0 in their opening game of the season on Sunday.
I think if Alisson has a big season, then they can run City close
Alisson joined from Roma for a then world-record fee of a goalkeeper of £66.8m, which was then broken by Chelsea signing Kepa for £71.6m earlier this month.
Sutton has been impressed with Jurgen Klopp’s transfer business but says Alisson’s form will be key to their potential success.
“I think so (Liverpool have strengthened enough),” Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I think the goalkeeping situation is the big one.
“I think if Alisson has a big season, then they can run City close.
“When you look at Manchester City and the strength in depth they have in every position, I don’t think anybody comes close to them.
“But Liverpool I think that they are the next strongest squad.
“I think if you looked at their bench last season, it was pretty thin.
“They’ve signed the likes of (Xherdan) Shaqiri, (Naby) Keita in midfield.
“They know how to beat Manchester City, so if anybody can do it then Liverpool are going to run them close.
“But they’ve spent big money and they’ll want a return.”
Liverpool's next outing in the league is away to Crystal Palace next Monday.
Palace won their opening match of the season 2-0 at Fulham.
